NATURE CALLING
Underwaterworld I
A magical world where we don’t give enough attention to where we are not enough aware of.
This artwork is an ode to the underwaterworld and has to point out that this underwaterworld, the coral in particular, has disappeared.
During Tubien’s trip in Asia she was hit by the beauty of nature. Volcanoes, rainforest, beaches, cliffs and the sea. If you’ve never dived you miss half the world. There is literally a whole new world when you dive. A serene, moving, magical world. You’re just accepted as a visitor. What also hit her was the pollution, swimming between plastic and the lack of respect of tourists for the sea.

Palmoil plantation
The disappearance of the rain forest and the often endangered species living in it.
In September 2016, Tubien left to go to Asia for a few months, with the main reason to see orangutans in the wild. This is a dream that originated in her childhood. The increasing deforestation and reduction of the orangutan habitat increased the urgency.
She didn’t see Orangutans in the wild therefore she had to go to a so-called rehabilitation center (where chased orangutans were taken from their own habitat). The huge amount of palm oil plantations made her see them for jungle. This experience, from her own eyes, shows how the jungle is destroyed and what this means for the animals that lived there, inspired the artwork Palm oil plantation.
What you see are compressed images of plantations (to point out their amount) and the hidden animals that are threatened. This is transparently printed on plexiglas to emphasize the threat and disappearance.
Doomed
When we do nothing to save the earth, what would that look like? Which color would that have? When is the end? Do we also experience beauty in this?
Treespirits I
If trees were people, would we cut them down?
Treespirits brings Tubien’s worries about climate change closer to home. Tubien feels a strong connection with trees; for her every tree is one, as if trees are individuals with their own soul and character. In addition, the forest is a place where she feels free of all the restrictions that society imposes on us as humans and where creativity flourishes. The destruction of this is therefore disastrous in several ways. Even now Tubien wants to work in layers, to show the individuality of each tree and to give every tree a place and space. That way they get a voice.
